Dear High School Choral Director,

Each year, the Appleton MacDowell Male Chorus grants three scholarships to graduating seniors who are aspiring to further their education in an institution of higher education. These scholarships are granted to young male soloists who demonstrate proficiency in singing and musical presentation. General music competition criteria are followed in the audition process. A general rules outline and registration form is attached to this letter.

At this time, we would like to ask your help in seeking out candidates from your school who you may feel qualify for one of these awards. You may send as many from your chorus as you see fit. We are going to hold the scholarship auditions on:

MONDAY, APRIL 30, 2007

BEGINNING AT 6:30 P.M.

IN THE CHORUS ROOM AT APPLETON EAST HIGH SCHOOL

A panel of three chorus members will judge the competition. Ratings are based on tone, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, interpretation, and diction. See the application form for more details.

It is intended that we will give three awards of varying amounts based on the scores that each singer achieves. Last year, the first place award was $1,000. The award amounts are established each year by the board of directors of the MacDowell Chorus.

To register for the audition, please complete the attached form and return to the address shown at the bottom of this letter by April 23rd. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about this event.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Kevin Weber – Scholarship Chairman

REGISTRATION AND GENERAL RULES

GENERAL RULES:

1. The solo must be taken from the current WSMA listings for Class A tenor or baritone voice.

2. The soloist must provide his own accompanist. We cannot provide an accompanist.

3. The winners should be available for an awards presentation during the MacDowell Concert on Saturday, May 5th at 7:30 P.M. at the Lawrence University Chapel. Concerts last about 2 hours.

4. The award will be paid when the chorus receives notification of acceptance to an institution of higher learning. This must occur before January 1, 2008.

5. Not all scholarships may be awarded each year. Those senior students competing must achieve a minimum numerical score on the adjudication form in order to qualify for that award. The scale is: 25 total possible points; 1st place – 23-25; 2nd place- 19-22 and 3rd place- 15-18.

A score of less than 14 will not qualify

6. If several students score into one of the top three categories, the student attaining the highest score wins that place and the next highest score will win the next lower award. If there is a tie on points, the judges will give consideration to characteristics such as stage presence, overall confidence, general appearance, etc. Since several students may fall into a given category (e.g., -three in the first place category), a student may not receive an award even though he may have scored more than 15 points. The decision of the judges will be final and not open for discussion.
